The Long Beach Unified School District is hosting a Local Hiring Fair to encourage subcontractors in the construction trades, especially subcontractors who live and work locally, to pre-qualify for upcoming school building and renovation projects.
The event is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 28 at the Teacher Resource Center, 1299 E. 32nd St. in Signal Hill. The hiring fair is open to all but specifically targeted at individuals and businesses within the school district boundaries, which include the cities of Long Beach, Signal Hill, Avalon and parts of Lakewood.
The school district is in the midst of a series of renovation and new building projects, made possible by the voter-approved Measure K, which provides $1.2 billion in funding for school improvements. These funds are limited to building projects and cannot be used for salaries or operations costs.
In an effort to keep Measure K dollars in the local area, the Board of Education last year approved a Local Hiring Procedure, which calls for outreach to qualified trades people who live and work within district boundaries.
General contractors for most projects have already been selected. They are CW Driver, Hensel Phelps, McCarthy, Turner, Roebellen Daum, and Tilden-Coil. These companies will have representatives at the event to provide details of upcoming projects and the type of skilled workers needed.
