A Hero's Welcome

Bixby Elementary School honored active military service personnel and veterans during an annual schoolwide event just before the recent Veterans Day holiday.

Service members also watched live from Kuwait, Puerto Rico and the East Coast as Bixby students, staff and others participated.

Among the veterans honored was U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Nick Karthas of Lakewood, pictured with this article. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  He earned the the WWII Victory Medal, European-African WWII Medal with three bronze stars, Asiatic Pacific WWII Medal, Korean War Medal, Vietnam Medal and Good Conduct Medal.  He first enlisted at 17 years old and turned 90 this year.
