Stanford Middle School eighth grader Dina Miranda will return to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. next month after qualifying in regional competition.
Miranda finished in the top three of more than 150 spellers throughout Los Angeles County at the Regional Bee on March 9 and, coupled with her 19th place finish at last year’s national competition, earned one of a limited number of invitations.
Last year Miranda made history as the first student from the Long Beach Unified School District to win the county regional event and advance to D.C., where she was one of 41 spellers who qualified for the finals, televised on ESPN. Among the words she spelled correctly in last year’s national competition were nephelognosy, laparotomy, polymorphous and piedmont.
In 2016, when Miranda was a fifth grader at Gant Elementary School, she won second place in the county competition. This year’s national event is scheduled for May 27 to 30.
