The International Student Registration Center (ISR) is located at 999 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, California. All students new to the Long Beach Unified School District are given a Home Language Survey at their school. Those whose primary language is other than English are directed to the ISR. Here students and their parents/guardians will be given help in registering for school and receive an explanation about the various instructional programs in our school district. Students will be tested to determine their level of proficiency in English and their native language. The ISR also has the Student Health Center where children may receive immunizations and/or physical examinations, as needed. Finally, students and parents will be given the opportunity to request the language instruction program they feel is best suited to the child, and then the child is assigned to a school.
There is a multi-lingual staff at ISR, able to communicate to families in the following languages: English, Cambodian (Khmer), Cebuano (Philippines), French, Hmong, Iu-Mien, Lao, Samoan, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. As work schedules permit, staff are available to provide translation services for schools and offices.
Foreign high school students wishing to study in the United States may do so with an F-1 Student Visa. Sponsors, who have taken the step to find a space at a Long Beach high school, may obtain the I-20 application form at the ISR office. The sponsor must complete the I-20 application form, pay one year's tuition in advance, and have the I-20 form approved by the ISR Director, prior to submitting the I-20 application to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service for a F-1 visa. A student may attend only high school on an F-1 visa, with a one-year limit to his/her studies in a public school.
