Special Education
Questions about Special Education or General Education Programs should first be directed to the school site of attendance.
The Long Beach Unified School District includes 48 elementary schools (grades K-5) and 7 K-8 schools. Elementary schools offer an array of services to accommodate the educational needs of all students. All elementary schools provide RSP (Resource Specialist Program) services for identified students who require additional support in reading, written expression, and/or math. Students may receive this help in a separate class taught by the RSP teacher or within the general education classroom setting with collaboration provided by the RSP teacher. Students who need more intense intervention may attend a Special Day Class (SDC).
LBUSD has published California State standards in every subject area, describing what every student is expected to know and be able to do. Teachers and administrators hold themselves accountable for helping all general education and special needs students to achieve these standards. Teachers regularly administer standardized assessments to measure students' progress. Elementary schools provide a variety of interventions to assist students, including tutoring and reading/math development classes.
