Parents: Graduation Prep and Beyond
Career Technical Education (CTE) engages all students in a dynamic and seamless learning experience resulting in their mastery of the career and academic knowledge and skills necessary to become productive, contributing members of society. CTE courses, which are offered at all high schools in Long Beach, provide technical training while also emphasizing the integration of core academic concepts such as mathematics and language arts. Examples of CTE courses include Graphic Arts, Automotive Mechanics, World Wide Web Publishing, and Introduction to Engineering.
The district also has a Regional Occupation Program (ROP) that provides 11th and 12th grade students (and in some cases, adults) both job skills training and actual on the job internships. In some cases, students are paid for their work, while also earning high school credit. Examples of ROP courses include Medical Assisting, Auto Collision Repair, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Law Enforcement, and Retail Merchandising and Sales.
Most of the district’s high schools have small learning communities or academies, and many of them use CTE courses as a cornerstone or theme of an academy. The course sequence of each academy will determine which classes are available to students. In many cases, ROP courses, which provide job skills training and work experience, are capstones to the academy experience.
With CTE and ROP courses, students are able to make a stronger connection between school and the real world. Making this connection often increases students’ interest in school and motivates them to go on to college and/or pursue a particular career.
