School Building Plan: Measure KWhat's New
Measure K is a ballot initiative, approved by 71 percent of voters in November 2008, which makes available $1.2 billion from property taxes to build, renovate and improve schools in the Long Beach Unified School District. The funds come from issuance of a series of bonds to occur four to six times in about ten years.
Since the measure was approved, steady progress is being made to reconfigure and rehabilitate Long Beach Unified School District's aging schools. The funds made available by Measure K has been budgeted to address the most critical building needs of the district. Check out the major projects under construction or being planned for the next several years. The first to be built with Measure K funds, Nelson Middle School in Signal Hill, is scheduled to open this fall. McBride High School, the first of a number of small high schools being planned, is under construction, and expected to open in fall 2013. Other Measure K projects in the planning stages include Newcomb Academy, Roosevelt Elementary School and the new swimming pool at Cabrillo High School.
Coming further down the line are the conversion of Jordan Freshman Academy to a small high school, building of a small high school on the Browning site, and re-building of Jordan High School.
Other Measure K projects include removal of portable structures, installation of new boilers and development of districtwide wireless technology and centralized clocks and security systems.
