Transitional Kindergarten
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an exciting educational opportunity for young learners. TK is the first year of a two-year program that provides children with birthdays between September 2 and February 2, age and developmentally appropriate curriculum taught by credentialed teachers. Parents have a choice to enroll their student in Transitional Kindergarten or wait the additional year when the student is age-eligible to enroll in kindergarten.
The youngest students in a kindergarten class risk struggling academically, emotionally, and socially; transitional Kindergarten ensures that children have these essential skills, which are foundations to successful learning when they begin kindergarten. Transitional Kindergarten bridges the path between preschool and kindergarten. These classrooms are located throughout the city and have a 2:24 teacher to student ratio (2022-23).
Transitional Kindergarten enrollment begins online and at the school of residence on February 1. Please see the district map with the TK school sites. If the school of residence does not offer TK, families will use the School of Choice process or be assigned a TK site through the Early Learning and Elementary Schools office.
