The Long Beach Police Department has provided the following personal safety tips:
- Always be alert and aware of your surroundings and the people around you
- Paying too much attention to an electronic device (iPod, cell phone, game system) can make you a target
- Do not make it obvious that you have an electronic device, and avoid using one on the street
- Don’t display your valuables in public view (money, jewelry, electronic devices, etc.)
- Wearing ear or headphones prevents you from hearing what may be happening around you
- Be aware of locations and situations that may make you vulnerable to crime, such as dark parking lots, walkways, alleyways and restrooms
- Walk confidently and at a steady pace, and make eye contact with people
- If you feel someone is following you, move to a well-populated area
- Whenever possible travel with a friend; there is safety in numbers
- Stay in well-lighted areas as much as possible
- Walk close to the curb and avoid doorways, bushes and alleys where someone could hide
- Report suspicious activity immediately by calling 9-1-1
