Poly High School boys’ cross-country coach Mike Fillipow and team members helped to convince the Long Beach City Council to proceed with design and bidding for a proposed pedestrian path. The team attended a recent City Council meeting to advocate for the path. Fillipow served on the committee to propose the project.
The project consists of constructing an 11-foot-wide pedestrian path using a resin-based paving material along 3.1 miles of the shoreline, constructing a new pedestrian/bicycle ramp on the east side of the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier, and relocating the beach bicycle path inland at specific locations.
The project creates a separate path exclusively for pedestrians, relieving congestion.
A city official noted that the cross-country team’s efforts helped to influence the outcome of a highly visible, $8 million project.
