December 15, 2000
Rotary Past President Frank Newell, a Poly High School alumnus and local attorney, passed the hat at Long Beach Rotary Club recently. He raised approximately $20,000 in donations and matching funds for Reading by 9 books.
These funds will buy 12,000 books for the 10 Long Beach Unified School District schools with the lowest book-to-pupil ratios. Those elementary schools are Bryant, Burbank, Garfield, Grant, Harte, Powell, Prisk, Stevenson, Sutter and Tucker.
The 1999 Rotary Read by 9 recipients of new books were Edison, Hudson, International and Roosevelt elementary schools.
Reading by 9 is sponsored by Rotary, Los Angeles Times and Scholastic, Inc. The new books will be selected by school librarians.
