A Message on School Safety

Hello, Parents and Students.

In light of last week’s terrible shooting in Parkland, Florida, I want to thank all of you for helping us to continue the important work of teaching and learning.

Our schools work closely with law enforcement each day, often behind the scenes, including via monitoring of social media, to keep our students safe.  We take seriously any threat to school safety.  Each school maintains a safety plan and practices drills for a variety of potential scenarios, including an active shooter situation.  For safety reasons, we cannot publicly share certain tactical protocols jointly developed with law enforcement and our Office of School Safety and Emergency Preparedness, but please know that we continually revise and improve our plans using guidance from national experts.

In the effort to keep schools safe, among our most valuable assets are the thousands of eyes and ears of our staff, students and parents, who keep us apprised of any suspicious activities so that we can assess potential threats and take appropriate actions with our partners in law enforcement.  Remember, if you see something, please say something so that we can do something.

The safety and wellbeing of our students is always our top priority, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation.

Best regards,

Christopher J. Steinhauser
Superintendent of Schools
