The Long Beach Public Library Foundation recently celebrated its annual dictionary and thesaurus giveaway to all Long Beach Unified School District third-graders with a Dictionary Day ceremony at Lincoln Elementary School.
Now in its 19th year, the event ensures that Long Beach children have dictionaries in their homes to help them with spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Since its inception in 2003, more than 135,000 new dictionaries have been donated to local third-grade students. This year’s Dictionary Days program was funded by Farmers & Merchants Bank.
“Providing students with the tools to be successful is crucial to their development and should be the goal of every supporter of education,” said Ryan Ballard, Library Foundation Board President. “The Library Foundation has continued this program for nearly two decades because we have witnessed how it helps students become better readers, stronger writers and more resourceful learners.”
LBUSD families of third grade students can contact their school for details regarding the distribution of dictionaries.
