Home - Research and School Improvement

The Office of Research, Planning, Evaluation and School Improvement manages the student information and data systems, coordinates the district, state and college readiness testing, manages local and state accountability measures, conducts research and evaluation studies and processes requests to do research within the district.

Our mission is to work collaboratively to support all stakeholders by collecting, maintaining, and reporting accurate data, facilitating testing, and using current technology in order to provide useful and timely information and support toward positive student outcomes and achievement.

Our vision is to provide a dynamic data and online testing system and work collaboratively with all departments to connect teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders with timely data, information, training and resources.

  • Demographic and Performance Data:  Data on California’s schools and districts can be found at:  Data Quest or Ed-Data.  In addition, data aligned to the District Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) can be found on the LBUSD home page by choosing the “Parents” dropdown and clicking on “School Performance (LCAP)”
  • Request for Data:  If you are a current district employee who wishes to request data not currently available on LROIX, please click on the LROIX application “Research Data Request” and follow the corresponding steps.  If you are outside the district, a public records request can be placed in writing under Education Code 6253.  Please note that according to Ed. Code 6253.9 (2) (b), “the requester shall bear the cost of producing a copy of the record, including the cost to construct a record, and the cost of programming and computer services necessary to produce a copy of the record when …the request would require data compilation, extraction, or programming to produce the record.”
  • Request to Conduct a Research Study:  The Long Beach Unified School District has been a pioneer in the approval of large numbers of Applications to Conduct Research in the past because we believe research will ultimately improve our practices.  Due to the COVID-19 emergency, active data collection associated with external research is currently suspended as campuses are closed for an indefinite amount of time. Capacity to participate in research activities will also be limited when students and staff return to campus locations at a future date. Concerns include safety as well as atypical contexts affecting data collection and research validity. This temporary suspension will allow schools to maintain a safe educational environment for students and time to return to normal working conditions.
  • Current District Employees:  If you are a current district employee who wishes to conduct research as part of a graduate studies program (Master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation), please access the application through the myLBUSD Portal (  Once logged into the portal, go to the intranet where you will find the application information under the “Research, Planning and Evaluation” heading.
